Print’s Chinese origins

Our History / Early printing / Print’s Chinese origins

In 2nd century China, the three basics for printing – paper, ink and surfaces in relief – were first successfully combined. Initially, wooden ‘seals’ were impressed on official documents, letters and works of art. Later, reusable clay relief blocks were invented. Images and words could be reproduced multiple times. The implications for the world were profound.
