Exeter’s growth

Our History / Early printing / Exeter’s growth

By the 18th Century, building on hundreds of years of Westcountry farming, Exeter was England’s leading wool market and 6th largest town. Vast amounts of cloth were woven locally and exported though Topsham. Exeter’s first newspaper is thought to have been published in 1704. Printing supported many forms of economic, social and artistic activity in the city.
